This Hourglass Yearbook is
dedicated to retiring art
teachers, Mrs. Marie Shack
and Mrs. Suzette Durso.

The Yearbook Staff and Class of 201 1 would
like to thank these two outstanding individuals
for their decades of service to the Wilmington
community and students throughout the
Wilmington Public School system.

For the past 24 years, Mrs. Shack has taught
in the Wilmington Public Schools, helping
students to grow as artists and as individuals.
Additionally, she has served as the Visual Arts
Liaison, working to provide a well-rounded
arts curriculum across the district.

Mrs. Durso leaves us after 32 years
of service, having built an impressive
photography program here at Wilmington
High School. Known for her pleasant
demeanor and love for art, she will be
greatly missed next year.

Both of these amazing teachers have
touched the lives of Wilmington students
over the years. We wish them both the
best as they "graduate" with this year's
senior class!

"The difference between a successful person and
others is not a lack of strength, not a lack
of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will."

— Vincent T. Lombardi

Success is something that you are responsible to
find as you travel through life; no one can or will
simply give it to you. In order to meet with success,
you must be willing to be more persistent and
more determined than anyone else and to take
the time to understand that there is no substitute
for hard work. You must also learn that taking the
time to care for others will bring you more personal
success than you can ever imagine.

Be willing to pause and enjoy everyone and
everything that is within your personal circle. Try not to
put yourself in the position of wishing you had done
something else or something more. Family and
loved ones must be at the precipice of your thoughts
at all times. In life, when things are good or not so
good, the ones you love and who truly love you will
be right by your side. In reality, that is probably the
best measure of your success as a person.

Look forward to your future successes. Use the tools
you have learned throughout your time here as you
begin to take the first steps of your journey through life.
Be willful like Lombardi advises, and use your strength
and knowledge more efficiently and effectively.
Congratulations and good luck to all of you!

Mr. Eric Tracy
Principal

For most students, freshman year of
high school can be a scary and
nerve-racking experience. But then
again, the members of the Class of
201 1 are not most students. No longer
big fish in the small pond of middle
school, the Class of 20 11 entered high
school eager and determined to make
a name for themselves in their new
surroundings. Starting off the year with
a splash, elections were quickly held
for class officers. Cody Nielsen was
elected as President, along with vice
President Sean Woodbury, Secretary
Heather Kealos, and Treasurer Dennis
Murphy. Getting down to business with
the help of class advisors, Ms. Tashjian
and Ms. Thomas, the class officers put
together many fundraisers, including
selling Candy Grams and hosting
Wilmington High School's first ever
Freshman Class Dance, Showing off
their school spirit during Spirit Week and
Pep Rallies, joining a plethora of clubs,
and excelling on sports teams, the
class seemed to hold their own against
the upperclassmen. With continued
dedication and determination, the
Class of 201 1 would find great things in
store during their time at WHS.

Sophomore year proved to be a
year of change both inside and
outside of Wilmington High School.
During a historic election, the country
elected Barack Obama as its first
African American president; while in
school, the Class of 201 1 elected
four new class officers: Kay Tummino
as President, Cat Parrella as Vice
President, Nicole Neville as Secretary,
and Amy Caira as Treasurer. Like the
officers before them, the girls got
right to work planning fundraisers to
benefit their class in the near future.
Spring Fling, the year's most successful
fundraiser, was enjoyed by all as it
served a welcome break from the
dreaded sophomore research paper
and the MCAS exam. Outside of
school, the town of Wilmington was
honored to host the Vietnam Memorial
Moving Wall, which the students at
WHS had the opportunity to experience
first-hand. In addition, the residents

of Wilmington demonstrated just how
strong a community could be as they
fought against cancer in Wilmington's
first annual Relay for Life event,
sponsored by the American Cancer
Society, As the year came to an end,
it was clear that although this year was
truly one to remember, the best was
yet to come in the next two years for
the Class of 201 1 .

Junior year was both an exciting and
crazy time for the Class of 20 11 . As
the class became busy with the SAT
and ACT exams, as well as college
visits and applications, Wilmington
High School was in the midst of its
accreditation process. When the
accreditation team visited the school,
a handful of juniors had the privilege of
participating in the process by being
part of a student panel, earning praise
from both teachers and administration
for their assistance. Before junior year
began, Kay Tummino, Cat Parrella,
Nicole Neville, and Amy Caira were
all re-elected to their same class
offices and from the beginning of
the school year, the focus was put on
planning a spectacular Junior Prom.
Two of the year's biggest fundraisers
were Cat Country t-shirts designed by
Kevin Mitchell and Santa Maria Pizza.
The Burlington Courtyard Marriott was
the location for a spectacular Junior
Prom in March. At the end of junior
year, as the Class of 20 11 prepared
for a fun-filled summer and the senior
year ahead, WHS prepared for the
retirement of Mr. Nee, a dedicated
Assistant Principal who was a favorite
with the students.

At last the 201 0-201 1 school year rolled
around, and with it came the much-
anticipated Senior Year. Along with the
excitement of once again being the
"big fish" in the pond, the Class of 201 1
couldn't help but look back and realize
that the words spoken by Mr. Tracy
freshman year were true: their time here
at Wilmington High School had flew by.
Determined to make their last year one
to remember, the Class of 201 1 set
out to do some work and have some

Cfafif/fifay

fun. While Vice President Cat Parrella,
Secretary Nicole Neville, and Treasurer
Amy Caira were re-elected from the
previous year, Heather Kealos made a
welcome addition as Class President,
stepping into the role with ease. Along
with a new Class President, came a
new Assistant Principal. Mr. Mahoney
joined the WHS staff with enthusiasm
and has become a great addition to
the school's administration. The year
was off to a good start with a successful
fundraiser at the 99 Restaurant, followed
by one planned at Chili's, Wilmington's
newest eatery. Although the Mr, and
Miss WHS competition was not a Senior
Class fundraiser, that did not stop the
overwhelming senior participation. Co-
hosts Kellie Moon and Marilyn Manos
brought the stage to life between acts
while fellow senior Jess Weaver won
the coveted title of Miss WHS with her
crowd-pleasing karate demonstration.
WHS athletes continued to shine on the
fields and courts and several teams
could boast impressive records by the
end of their seasons. The drama guild's
production of Children of Eden was a
big hit, featuring the outstanding vocal
performances of several members of
the senior class including Kelly Duffy, Kia
Dunn, and Sean Woodbury. This year,
school spirit was around every corner
as seen by the incredible costumes
and decorations during Spirit Week, as
well as by Wilmington High School's first
ever school-wide ugly holiday sweater
contest, which took place the day
before winter break and was organized
entirely by Zack Sears. In lieu of a
Prom Fashion Show, the Class of 201 1
decided to try a new venture by hosting
a Prom Expo Night, with the help of Emily
Stebbins and Mary Kate Mogan. The
Expo made for a fun night which got
everyone excited about the upcoming
prom season. Speaking of prom, a
fun and memorable Senior Prom was
held at the Crowne Plaza on May 1 3th,
with the help of Valerie Albano, Allison
Dancewicz, and Ana Perullo. Prom,
along with several other fun senior events
topped off an unforgettable final year for
the Class of 2011.

I never believed them when they said it
goes by fast but here we are. Nothing
was quite like it was supposed to be; it
wasn't perfect by a long shot but nothing
ever is. Instead it was just right in its own
way. Thanks to my family and friends I
can leave with unforgettable memories.
I appreciate you all more than you know.
Thank you for everything

Junior Prom for the Class of
201 1 was nothing short of
extraordinary. On March 26, 2010,
the night was filled with dancing,
music, smiles and laughter. As the
night continued Mike Amentola
and Allison Dancewicz were named
Prom King and Queen, while
James Johnston, Larissa Pienkowski,
Kia Dunn, and Cody Nilsen were
appointed as members of the
court. The dancing didn't stop until
the lights came up and the doors
closed, making the 201 Junior
Prom one of the most memorable
moments for this senior class.

Early in October, Wilmington High
School students showed their
dedication to the school with WHS's
annual Spirit Week celebration.

The week kicked off with Armed
Forces Day, and continued on with
Sports Day the following day. On
the 2nd to last day Wilmington
High was buzzing with spirit and
excitement with Class Day.
Freshmen walked the halls decked
out in Decade attire ranging from
the Stone Age up into the future.
Sophomores rocked Western Day
attire, and paraded in the hallways
with cowboy boots, cowboy hats,
and even Native American-themed
moccasins of all colors and sizes.
Juniors took on a Celebrity Look-
a-Like challenge where
Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton
and even a Michael
Jackson or two
could be
spotted

As always the week finished with
Blue and White Day, where students
of all grades decked out in blue
and white clothes, reeked of paint
and hairspray, and paraded
through the hallways
leaving blue footprints
behind them.

Mr. and Ms. WHS is always a
spectacle for students and
parents, and the competition
on Novemberl 0, 201 was no
exception. Students and parents
watched with eager eyes as
the contestants took the WHS
Auditorium by storm. Seniors
Meaghan Wamboldt and Ellie
Steen choreographed a dance
piece for the contestants to perform,
while other skits and demonstrations
of talent ranged from comedy to
rapping and singing and dancing.

As the night concluded, senior
Jessica Weaver was named Ms.
WHS thanks to an astounding
karate demonstration where she
chopped boards in half. Junior
Phil Lentini brought home
his second Mr. WHS title
with a live, on-stage
recreation of a
Nintendo's
Super

This year's Mr. and Ms. WHS
competition was truly an awe
inspiring event for not only the
class of 201 1 , but for everyone
in attendance.

The first of two "seniors verses
faculty" events, the annual Seniors
vs. Staff Volleyball game was held
on Tuesday, November 23, 201 0.
While seniors decked out in fun,
self-produced uniforms, the faculty
opted to sport their Dig Pink shirts,
showing their support to both the
WHS volleyball program and breast
cancer awareness,

Unfortunately for the seniors, the
faculty once again dominated in
this match-up, Here's hoping for a
better result at the Seniors vs. Faculty
Basketball game in April!

This year, the Senior vs. Faculty
Basketball Game can be found

This year's talent show at WHS
had a large variety of skilled
performers from dancers and
musicians, to jugglers and poets.
All of the contestants were bursting
with excitement to show the
audience and judges their special
talents. First place winner this year
was Allison Dancewicz with her
jazz dance routine. Second place
winners were Cody Nilson and John
Grealish with Cody's original song
"Concrete." Third place winners
were Ryan Collette, Mike Mullens
and Luke MacNeil, who covered
Grand Funk RR's "Sin's a Good
Man's Brother" in addition to an
original piece.

All of the contestants proved to
be extremely gifted in their various
niches, and the audience enjoyed
the entire evening of acts. A special
thanks goes out to Ms. Kassin and
Mrs. Hooper, who were the advisors
and coordinators behind this event.
Proceeds from the night went to
support the Science Club and the
Class of 2014.

After taking last year off, the
Foreign Language Club once
again hosted their bi-annual
Culture Festival. Taking over the
entire cafeteria, this year's event
was packed with students, faculty,
friends and family looking to
celebrate the various countries and
cultures around the world. Bouncing
from display to display and nation
to nation, visitors spent the evening
enjoying an assortment of treats
while learning more about our
global community.

Awards were presented to the
students who best represented
their given countries. Sporting
festive attire and supplementing
their table displays with impressive
performances certainly
helped to boost votes
with the judges, but
in the end only
three of the
thirty-
five

With a record breaking
attendance, the next festival
will need to book the Shriner's

WHS football had another
successful year this year
going 8-3. The team was lead
by captains Sean Hanley, Brian
Hurley, Kevin Moriarty and Gordon
Fitch. Despite the team's toughest
schedule in years, they were able
to pull off a good record. Strong
leadership and many talented
players is what carried this team.
Although the team fell short of
its goal for making the playoffs,
these athletes had accomplished
plenty. Their biggest achievement
may have been giving Masco their
first Cape Ann league loss since
2007. Overall, it was a fun and
successful year for the Wildcat
football team.

This was a great year for the
Wilmington High School
Cheerleading. During the
football season, we placed first
at CALS, and also competed at
Regionals and States. This year's
team included seniors Christa
Monteforte, Stephanie Mazzie,
and Macy Harper and was led by
captains Megan Torres, Lindsey
McCarthy, Catherine Parrella, and
Shannon Murphy.

The girls all bonded a lot this year
and overall they had a great
season. Go Wildcats

The soccer team yet again had
a successful season having an
1 1 -5-3 record and qualifying for the
state tournament. After losing twelve
seniors from last year's team, many
did not expect the boys' soccer
team to make another run at a
Cape Ann League title. With a very
young and inexperienced team,
they still managed to finish 2nd in
the league losing only to Masco by
a single point. The team was led
by Captains and All-Conference
players Nick Godzyk and Andy
Owens, as well as fellow Captain
and All Star Chris DiCecca. John
Malone also played a great season
in net and was recognized as an All
Star as well. Seniors Cam Garrant
and Shayne Kinsella anchored
down the team's defense. The
young Wildcats have a lot of
potential for the seasons to come.
Congrats on a great season.

The Girls Varsity Soccer Team had
I to endure a rebuilding year with a
jpry young team, but still had a good
season. Unfortunately, they did not
qualify for the state tournament this
year, but certainly proved themselves
as a strong contender with twelve
new players, The team was led by
captains Erin Cowden, Heather
Kealos, and Lauren Zaremba along
with other seniors Jess Maienza and
Maye Randall. The talents of junior
Alexa Brown and senior Lauren
Zaremba were also acknowledged
as Cape Ann League All Stars.

The Varsity Golf Team finished with
an overall record of 6-7 in their
final year in the Cape Ann League.
After a rocky start, they finished
rather strong to qualify themselves
for the state tournament as their
C.A.L record was right on the ,500
mark. It was considered another
successful season by Coach Steve
Lynch as they achieved their goal
of reaching states at Far Corners
Country Club. The team was lead by
seniors Andrew Spurr (captain), Tyler
Strem, Adam Martiniello and juniors
John Keough, Dalton Rolli, Dan
Keane, and Steve Taylor. Everyone
had another progressive year to work
on their skills and make themselves
better players to improve for the
future. The team would like to thank
Coach Lynch for another great
year and Chris Carter from Hillview

The WHS Boys Cross Country team
put together another good
season this year. The team was
much improved over years past,
putting together several strong races
against very talented Cape Ann
League teams. Though the Wildcats
did not end with a winning season,
they did have some outstanding
individual performances as well as
strong team efforts. The team was
led by Captain and team MVP Zack
Sears, as well as his fellow captains
Andrew LaRosa and Linden Hayes.
Aside from these seniors, several
underclassmen proved to be major
contributors. Sophomore Steve Halas
was the team's "Coaches Award"
recipient. Other strong contributors
included sophomore Andrew Sears,
who consistently finished within the
top 5 of the team. Sophomore Ryan
Kennedy who showed promise at
the beginning of the season but was
unable to compete later due to an
injury. Senior Joe Fitzgerald came on
strong during the second half of the
season putting together many solid
performances. These Wildcats hope
to irnprov-: next year, as they have a
lot of yoi ii talent taking charge

The 201 season for Girls Cross
Country was the best in 1 5 years or
more, according to Coach Bradley.
The team finished 6-4 with a 4th
place finish in the Cape Ann League
Meet and 1 1 th at the State Meet.
Leading the way was senior Nikki
Sirignano, freshman Sydnee Russo
and 7th grader Callie O'Connell.
They swept the top three places
in half of the League meets, and
those three are in the Top 6 Girls
that Bradley has coached. Senior
Amy Fisher is another Top 1 runner
that was outstanding. Fellow seniors
Lori Fletcher, Hannah Kelly, Michelle

young runners Nicole Romanzo, Kate

The Wilmington Varsity Wrestling

year. With few juniors and seniors,
fhey were still able to have a winning
record with help from new, younger
wrestlers. The talented first year
freshmen did really well filling in the
gaps the team had and picked
up many new techniques. A few
unfortunate events changed the
outcome of the season but, all things
considered, the team completed
another great year. The team was
led by Junior captain Alex Furlong
and Senior captain James Perry.
Thanks to the coaches and everyone
that contributed to the team. They
are looking forward to another great

This year's Boys Varsity Hockey
Team surprised many people.
After graduating 1 6 seniors a year
ago, this team won the Cape Ann
League and qualified for the state
tournament. Led by captain Brian
Hurley and assistant captains John
Malone and Andy Owens, the
Wildcats rolled to a 1 6-2-2 record
during the regular season to capture
the number one seed in the North
Sectionals. During the playoffs,
Wilmington beat Danvers 4-2 and
to Masco 4-3 in an overtime thriller
before losing to Saugus. Overall,
the season for the Wildcats was very
successful considering the great
adversities they had to overcome.
With a final record of 1 8-3-2, the
WHS hockey program leaves the
CAL winning the league for the fourth
straight year, making a total of ten
for the past sixteen years.

The Wilmington High Boy's Winter
Track team pulled off an amazing,
unexpected feat this winter: pulling
together a winning season. Starting
off 1 -4 to beginning the season,
the Wildcats found their stride and
finished the season strong. The team
finished with a record of 6-4 within
the Cape Ann League this year and
had many outstanding team and
individual performances in the Cape
Ann League Meet and the Division
3 State Meet. The winter coaches
were Mike Kinney and Brian Schell.
Kinney, in his first season as the head
coach of the team, did an amazing
job working with the talent that he
had from the get-go. The boys were
led by senior captains Zack Sears
and Marc Shibilia. Other notable
performers included but were
certainly not limited to seniors Johnny
Weber, Nate Downs; junior Dave
Swider; sophomores Steve Halas, Pat
Barry, Andrew Sears and freshman Eli
Jennings. As it was, there were only
a handful of upperclassmen on the
team this year, so this group has a lot
to build on for the future.

Girls Winter Track had a great
turnaround in 201 1 . After a
winless season in 201 0, the team
turned in a very respectable 6-5
record. Leading the way was Junior
Nichole Lunt who was the top scorer,
MVP and a State meet qualifier in
shot put. Seniors Catrina Fryer and
Nikki Sirignano shared the Coaches
Award. Catrina scored many points
in the 55 meter dash as did Nikki in
the 2 mile run; both made it to the
States. The team was blessed with
three excellent relay teams; the
4x400 meter team of Cali Peffer,
Michelle Barnes, Rachel Alatalo
and Alex Bischoff set a mark not
seen in years. The senior group of
Jess Maienza, Catrina Fryer, Maye
Randell and Heather Kealos were
a force to be reckoned with in the
4x200 meter event, and the 4x800
team of Sydnee Russo, Hannah
Kelly, Kate Richardson and Kelly
Hartsough also went to States and
fared well. Melanie Folk in shot put,
Savannah Hubbard in hurdles along
with Rachel Alatalo, Sydnee Russo

Club WHS has worked hard to have both a fun and
successful year, filled with many volunteer events and
opportunities for Wilmington High School students! Some
highlights of the year include participating in the Walk to
End Alzheimer's, raising $500 to benefit childhood cancer
research through the Alex's Lemonade Stand foundation,
and running a book drive to benefit troubled teens. As a
group, we continue to volunteer and help our neighbors
both in Wilmington and in surrounding communities. We
work in our community to make a difference in the best
way we know how - through the gift of giving, and what we
know how to give best is our time.

Academic Decathlon Club

Advisor: Kevin Riley

The Wilmington Academic Decathlon competes with teams
of students from high schools across the state in a series
of ten academic events. These events cover Economics,
Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Fine Arts and
Social Science. Students are given awards based both on
individual and team achievements, A unique aspect of
the program is that each nine-member team must consist
of three students each with "A", "B" and "C" grade point
averages. Students may be in any grade and an unlimited
number of alternatives may also compete.

Medical Careers Club

Advisor: Susan Rowe

Students explore health careers, through site visits to
hospitals, clinics for job shadows, and by inviting in
healthcare professionals to speak about their careers.
Club members raise awareness of health issues such as
breast cancer and heart disease. Students participate
in community service activities; raising funds for breast
cancer, donations for the food pantry, ongoing monthly
meal donations to Bread Roses in Lawrence, MA,
earthquake relief, and blood drives.

Medical Careers Club students participate in an outreach
to Wilmington elders in a joint collaboration with two
other clubs to form an intergenerational link, promoting
understanding, and caring relationships across the
generations. Intergenerational activities are planned with
the Senior Center throughout the school year,

Bread and Roses

Advisor: Susan Rowe

Bread & Roses is a soup kitchen in Lawrence with a strong
and rich tradition of being a center of hope and caring
to the hundreds of people in the Merrimack Valley who
are struggling for survival. Founded in 1 980, Bread &
Roses' primary purpose is to ease the hunger of people
in the community of Lawrence, MA by providing a
well-balanced, nutritious evening meal. All in need are
welcome to the center to partake of a community meal
in a peaceful, friendly environment. Guided by a spirit of
hospitality and nonviolence, respect for the dignity of each
person who comes through the door is a hallmark of the
Bread & Roses community. Since hunger relief is the main
concern, there is no cost for the meal.

Participation in Bread & Roses is a WHS community service
initiative, it is a year long, voluntary commitment by students
and staff, to supply a portion of the evening meal, on the
first Tuesday of each month. Student volunteers receive
community service credit for their efforts.

Model UN

Advisor: Matthew Hackett

Model UN/Debate Club gives students the opportunity to
discover, through simulation, how the United Nations works
to collectively promote world peace and cooperate on a
variety of international issues. The main focus of the club
is preparation for conferences, in which each student
is assigned a country and a council of the UN. Student
delegates then debate a current international affair and
must work to compromise and pass a resolution. This year,
our club attended conferences at St. John's High School,
St. John's Prep, and Boston College High School in addition
to running our own in-school practice conferences.

Foreign Language Club is dedicated to expanding the
views of Wilmington High School students and introducing
them to cultures other than their own. While the club
focuses on the languages and nationalities of many of our
members, we also introduce members to the food and
customs of exotic countries that they would not normally
have the chance to experience.

The senior class officers have worked incredibly hard to raise money and
plan events to make everyone's senior year memorable. This year there
was the first ever prom expo that had raffles, ice-cream, and an area
where students could vote on a prom song and theme. Multiple restaurant
fundraisers, senior vs. faculty basketball game, and many other fundraisers
took place to raise money for the prom. The class officers have spent
countless hours planning the prom focusing on every detail. This year the
prom was held at the Crowne Plaza in Danvers on Friday may 1 3th 201 1 .
The four years of high school have been a time in life none of us will ever
forget. They would like to thank the 201 1 class advisers, Ms. Thomas and
Ms. Tashjian, for all they have done for the class.

Your Honor

Poem by Ms. Linda Peters

Recited at the 20 1 1 National Honor Society Induction

I lead a simple life, filled with family and friends
And like everyone else beginnings and ends
But on top of all of that I share each day with you
And I wish everyone could feel as blessed as I do

Wilmington High School; your home for 4 years
The home of highs and lows and laughs and tears
Victories, defeats, struggle and success
Have helped shape the value that you all possess

And despite all of the bumps and hardships you sometimes face
You've managed to lead with integrity and grace
And every time you've been knocked down, and forced to fall
You've been able to stand up again triumphantly tail

V*

Twitter and Facebook, languages I can't speak

Wall posts and tweets, to me if s all Greek

And yet in this technology, mechanical driven day

Remember if s your minds and your hearts that will help you pave the way

From derivatives to Shakespeare, you've passed the test
Your dedication has placed you above the rest
I hope you know there is no goal you can't reach
And I thank you for giving me a reason to teach

Whether it be your passion or not the course work you complete
Will lead you to infinite opportunities and maybe even a treat
For you will evolve every day that you live
If you are ready and willing and able to give

And all that you have led to this day

A crowning achievement that cannot be taken away

So without any more babbling or further ado

It is time that I proudly pay tribute to you
